The practice of acupuncture began about 4500 years ago in China. The first acupuncture needles were made of animal bones and stone knives or sharp edged tools (described by the character 'Bian' 扁) - used to puncture and drain abscesses. Approximately 3500 years ago, Bian stones were discarded and metal needles, in the form of the classical 'nine needles', began to be used. The 'nine needles' were initially made of bronze, followed by gold and other metals. Today, acupuncture needles are sterile, made of stainless-steel, and they are disposable (single use only).

Acupuncture involves inserting very thin (hair-size), sterile needles at specific points on your body called the neural nodes (a collection of neural networks). Upon needle insertion, the input nerves send signals to your central and peripheral nervous systems to promote vasodilation and activate the appropriate propriospinal reflexes as well as neurotransmitters to heal/restore functions of the affected areas of your body. For example, acupuncture can help you relieve your body from pain by promoting more blood movement to the injured area and stimulating the release of your beta-endorphin & enkephalins (body's natural painkiller that is about 8 to 33 times more potent than morphine) to de-swell the nerve endings that keep sending pain signals to your brain. If you have lingering pain or any stubborn discomfort, and you want a safe yet natural solution with virtually no side effects, then acupuncture offers a time-proven and extremely effective method of long-term pain relief.

What People Are Saying

I truly enjoy Shirley and Ed at the Acupuncture Center. They take the time to listen and I never feel rushed. They are atentative to listening to your body's imbalances and listening to feedback on follow-up visits.

Shirley had helped me so much in the past several months. It has been great to find someone who will find the root of the problem and not just put a bandaid on it.

My treatment has been with Shirley. She is a very caring professional and cares about all aspects of your life, not just the reason you came in. I have had nutritional counseling, Chinese herbs, and acupuncture with her, and I highly recommend her.

My first impression was a peaceful and clean waiting area, the wait was, well there was NO wait really. Ed was awesome attentive and patient while I rambled on with my "issues". He spent a great deal of time evaluating my painful ankle, and explaining my treatment plan as well as the payment and insurance process.
